City Announces Free Rain Barrels

Cleaner, Greener Pawtucket

PAWTUCKET – The City of Pawtucket and the Department of Public Works have announced that, once again, residents will have the ability to receive a free rain barrel for their property. Installing rain barrels is an easy way for property owners to harvest stormwater runoff on their property, which reduces the stress on the city’s drainage system. The water retained in the barrel can be used to water grass or flowers, and in doing so, the homeowner lessens their impact on the environment and saves money on their water bill.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, collecting roof runoff in rain barrels reduces the amount of water that flows from your property. It’s a great way to conserve water and it’s free water for use in your landscape.

The Department of Public Works has partnered with the Pawtucket Arts and Culture Commission and the Jacqueline M. Walsh School for the Arts to paint and decorate some of the barrels.

To receive a free rain barrel for your property, please fill out the online application and send to dpw@pawtucketri.com or call 401-728-0500 ext. 317 by March 15, 2019. Rain barrel distribution is expected to be in May or June.
