Community Engagement Updates from City of Pawtucket and Pawtucket Police Department

These are very different and challenging times as we look forward and see what is happening in other communities nationally. Pawtucket’s uniqueness makes us stronger as a community, and we have the responsibility to engage and support each other.

The city of Pawtucket is a diverse community where the Pawtucket Police Department continues to work alongside our residents and community leaders. The City and Police Department are pleased to announce that the interview process is now underway as we look to onboard additional resources through the new Community Liaison position.

The Pawtucket Police Department remains focused on protecting the community if/when incidents occur locally as have been occurring nationwide. The safety and well-being of our residents will remain of the utmost importance. Last month, a noose was found in a garage within our city. We assure you all that this isolated incident is still under investigation. This behavior is unacceptable in our community and we have and will continue to protect everyone in our community.

The Pawtucket Police also thanks all of our residents for their cooperation during the ongoing protests in neighboring cities. As the Department was assisting neighboring communities with possible threats of riots, they were required through protocol to wear their protective gear which had not been needed in decades. This is not standard operational gear and will hopefully not be needed again anytime soon. We want are community to know the PPD is sensitive to the current times and will continue to protect residents.

The City and Departments look to strengthen their relationships through the Neighborhood Response Unit, Community Liaison as well as building on the current sensitive and diverse outreach. Together, we will continue to build relationships through our community which is contrast to what is happening at the National level.
