Pawtucket Police Announce Police Officer Recruitment Drive

Acting Police Chief Tina Goncalves announces that the Pawtucket Police Department will be recruiting for the position of police officer beginning June 11, 2017.

“We hope to attract a diverse qualified group of applicants”, said Chief Goncalves.  “The department will work with community leaders and civic groups as well as utilize social media to target as many potential applicants as possible.” Applications will be accepted starting Sunday, June 11, 2017 and will close Saturday, August 5, 2017

In an effort to help prepare applicants for the police officer selection process the department will hold an orientation meeting to answer questions about the different phases of the process.  The orientation meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at Pawtucket City Council Chambers 137 Roosevelt Ave Pawtucket, RI.

The department will also offer applicants the option to participate in a Preliminary Physical Fitness Assessment test on July 8, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at the McCoy Stadium Annex to allow them an opportunity to gauge their ability to pass the test.  “In the past we have seen police applicants disqualified because they missed a sit up or made a mistake during the physical agility test”, said Chief Goncalves. “Our hope is that applicants who have difficulty with the preliminary agility test will have time to work on their deficiencies to ensure they have a successful test.”

The Physical Fitness Assessment test will be given on Saturday, August 12 & Sunday, August 13, 2017. Candidates can view the Physical Fitness Assessment requirements at:  http://rimpa.ri.gov/documents/fitness/2012PhysicalFitnessAssessment.pdf

Those applicants who pass the Physical Fitness Assessment test will be invited to take a written exam on Saturday, August 19, 2017.  Applicants should download the mandatory reading comprehension manual.  NPST_R--Reading Comprehension Manual (RCM):   http://fpsi.com/docs/National-Police-Select-Test-Reading-Comprehension-Manual.pdf

Applicants may order the “NPST_R Candidate Orientation Guide” by clicking the following link:  http://www.fpsi.com/police-orientation-guide-download-disclaimer/

Prior to admission to the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy, The Pawtucket Police Department will be testing applicants to gauge for their proficiency on the RI Municipal Police Academy Aquatic Skills Evaluation. We want to ensure that applicants are aware of the requirements so that they can start practicing for the swim test in advance.

The following prerequisites must be attempted during the first course meeting and are used to show the level of the student’s ability in the water:

  • Swim 200 yards continuously using 100 yards of an approach stroke (crawl or breaststroke) and 100 yards of a tow stroke (sidestroke or elementary backstroke).
  • Tread water for 10 minutes.
  • Surface dive to a depth of 7 feet to 12 feet, retrieve a 40 lb. object and bring it to the surface.
  • Swim a distance of 30 feet or 5 body lengths underwater.

Applicants are required to possess the following minimum qualifications as of August 5, 2017: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED; age 18 or older; and U.S. citizenship; a valid driver’s license; 30 completed college credits or one year of Active Military Service in lieu of college credits
