Pawtucket’s Business Recycling Program Gains Popularity in Business Community Infrastructure Improvements to Newport Avenue/Route 1A

After a great deal of effort and correspondence between Pawtucket Mayor Donald R. Grebien, State Representative Raymond Johnston Jr. (District 61) and Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT), Newport Avenue/Route 1A in Pawtucket is set to undergo significant upgrades.

“Over the past few years, Rep. Johnston and I have received numerous calls and inquiries about the challenging conditions of the intersection at Newport Avenue and Cottage Street,” stated Mayor Grebien. Newport Avenue/Route 1A is classified as a State road and is therefore under the purview of the State and RIDOT for repairs and maintenance. “With the ‘State Road’ classification, it has been frustrating that we as a city are not able to immediately address the concerns of our residents and have to direct them to RIDOT,” said the Mayor. “It was that sense of wanting to be able to deliver improvements on behalf of our residents that led to Rep. Johnston and I seeking alternative measures to address repairs to that stretch of road,” continued Grebien.

In March of this year, Rep. Johnston also reached out to RIDOT and expressed his frustration, along with the frustration of the residents he represents, over the road conditions. “We really need to fix this section of road for the safety and well-being of all those who pass through it,” said Johnston in a March letter to RIDOT. After several subsequent conversations with RIDOT officials, it was determined that the City could complete the required repairs and then be reimbursed by RIDOT. “Being able to expedite this project was something that the Mayor and I felt was very important and could not wait any longer,” said Johnston. “I want to thank the folks at RIDOT for working together with the City to ensure that our streets are safe for our residents sooner rather than later,” stated Johnston.

“I would like to offer my thanks to Representative Johnston and RIDOT for their partnership on this issue that affects the daily travels of many of our residents,” said Mayor Grebien. “Pawtucket is proud to have Rep. Johnston representing us at the State House and I look forward to working with him in the future to keep our city moving forward,” concluded Grebien.

The City is in the process of scheduling the repairs to coincide with the existing schedule of aggressive road repaving efforts that would see over forty-two miles of resurfaced upon completion of this paving cycle.
